This multi-coloured and complex African metropolis is the biggest city in South Africa and probably the living example of its much debated history. Johannesburg is not the capital of the country, but it represents its main economic hub, and is also the seat of the Constitutional Court.
Popularly known as Jo’burg, the city is constantly under renovation in all areas, allowing it to slowly but decidedly overcome its ‘Apartheid’ legacy. The Central Business District (CBD) alternates historic buildings with skyscrapers and a lively nightlife. Suburbs like Melville, Newtown or Rosebank have a bohemian atmosphere. With some of the best Johannesburg hotels, Sandton City and Hyde Park are modern residential and shopping areas.
Get to know South Africa’s history at Constitution Hill, the Apartheid Museum, and the Hector Pieterson Museum. Natural areas like the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Cradle of Humankind’, the Lion Park Nature Reserve, or the Krugersdorp Nature Reserve are located outside the city.
OR Tambo International Airport is the largest airport in Africa, while the smaller Lanseria Airport offers connections to mainly domestic destinations. Hotels near Johannesburg’s airport are a popular choice to avoid the last-minute rush. Check out the wide range of Johannesburg accommodation deals available on Booking.com.

Johannesburg is a vibrant metropolis of coffee shops, cultures and people.
Gauteng as a province is the economic hub of South Africa and when looking to do business this would be the province to go to.
While for leisure there are many venues, hotels, and natural beauty to view and enjoy.

Two things are equally true: I love this city; it's a hard place to love. And it's become harder to love since I lived there 20 years ago, with things like consistent water and electricity no longer taken for granted. Driving there is a special kind of adrenaline rush (especially downtown), crime remains endemic, and the city is just crumbling. But it's also an incredibly friendly, diverse, culturally vibrant place. I go to Cape Town for beautiful views of the mountains and the sea; I go to Johannesburg to see old and dear friends and make new ones.

I like Joburg a lot but I stay in the northern suburbs.
I like Joburg a lot but I stay in the northern suburbs. That is really the secret to Joburg in my opinion is just stay in the suburbs around the mansions. There are tons of bars and restaurants and it’s very green. I really enjoyed going on walks because it is so beautiful. Just don’t walk alone after dark (same as anywhere else in SA) and you should have no problems

We stayed in Sandton (Premier Hotel Quatermain) but travelled a lot from there. We visited Nice on Poplar (Riverclub), The Comic Warehouse (Bedfordview), The Gingerbread Lady Bakery (Edenvale), Cremalat Cheese (Deli & Bakery and imported Italian products) and La Cucina (lunch, Tunney Ext 6, Elandsfontein, Bedfordview), Froggie Factory shop (Woodmead) and much more... We wanted to visit many other places, but time ran out... We made sure to travel in times that were less busy (when people go to or from work) and we also listened to the radio to determine whether traffic was expected and if so, we went into a different direction for that day.

It was too pretty, very organized, and neat, everyone kept saying it was because I was in the posh area but I only chose to see the good in SA because it was just too fine especially since it was in Africa, I also found the whole of SA quite modern having traveled to so many places. I only feel sad I didn't explore the tourist attractions nor nightlife

I love everything about Johannesburg there are big luxurious shopping malls the hotels are luxurious the hotels are big there's just traffic during rush hours and we should avoid those times my favourite place is sandton and Gold Reef City I eat at Syrian rose in fordsburg its a Syrian restaurant its really nice I would avoid travelling during rush hours like 6/7/8/9 in the morning 12/1 in the afternoon and 5/6 in the evening those are the rush hours.
Hotel Sky was one of the first hotels I stayed in when I travelled to South Africa for the first time before moving into my apartment. It is centrally located, whilst the interiors are a tad outlandish for my sensibilities, they are clean and well equipped.
They have a pretty decent gym and some lovely areas to cowork. Plus, the absence of loadshedding and brilliant bell hops does allow you to have a pretty wonderful experience, particularly if you’re a solo female traveller on a work trip.
We highly recommend MT Perry. It is a family-friendly secure suburb centrally located and close to all the top attractions in Joburg. It is approximately 20 - 25 Minutes' drive from OR Tambo International Airport. Once settled in, we easily visited Melrose Arch, Sandton, Midrand, Rosebank, Auckland Park, Melville, Joburg Zoo & CBD, Bryanston, and Soweto. The staff at MT Perry were so welcoming and friendly. All the required self-catering tools, Wi-Fi, DSTV were available and fully functional.
Great location situated just off a main road but extremely private in the Sandton area. Within walking distance of the Sandton CBD. Great security at the complex and a very welcoming and friendly host at the property for who nothing is too much trouble. The units are well furnished and provide all the necessary basics for an apartment living in the city. Great for a couple on a short break or business people spending a few nights in Johannesburg for some work.
I was surprised by the friendly staff since I told them I am in my honeymoon and they upgraded my room to an amazing room. Literally everything was amazing the room, the food and the friendly staff made our staying there awesome.
The breakfast was amazing also, the waitress Amena surprised us by bringing a celebration cake to us.
If i come back to Johannesburg definitely i will stay at four sessions hotel.
I have stayed in various places around Johannesburg during my South African trips for two last years, and this is my favorite. Amazing location, very chill and safe. Great staff, home feeling, good WiFi, good breakfast - our family stays here for the second time already, and if I’ll visit Johannesburg again, I will stay here again.
Very relaxing atmosphere with two pools, wonderful garden and a fish pond. Quiet area central in close proximity to Sandton and the northern suburbs. Wonderful staff and very clean. Will stay again next time I’m in Johannesburg! Thank you Ian, Paul and team for a wonderful and healing stay
Everything, but the breakfast was divine. I've stayed in many top chains around the world and this hotel BY FAR is the absolute best because it gives you the same or better quality but a lot more affordable. That breakfast though...I would go back to Joburg just to stay and eat again.
I stayed in this hotel for just 3 nights and the experience was great. I loved every moment of it. Complimentary services like extra water in your room, superb breakfast and the staff were all lovely. I would definitely love to stay here again when I come to Johannesburg. Thanks.
The staff was friendly, the apartment was clean, fast wifi and amazing food. The location is also close to the mall just a 5 minute walk. It is also close to the Gautrain Station so from the airport to the hotel is quite convenient. I can't wait to stay there again.
Staff were incredible, and couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and the room comfortable. The one small hiccup we had was dealt with seamlessly, one of the best 5 star hotels we have stayed in worldwide.
Well sized room for a lone traveller. The hotel is in a premium neighbourhood in Johannesburg with a matching shopping mall to boot.Nearby train station for fast connection to downtown City centre or O R Tambo international airport.
The hotel is very well located at Sandton. You can go easily walking to the Mandela square. The neighborhood is safe and beautiful. The hotel helped us to organize a quick guided tour to Johannesburg. The breakfast was fantastic.
The hotel is central. While not suitable for walking, it is a short distance to great restaurants, highways, the airport etc. The gardens and pool are beautiful, this place is really good value for the Johannesburg area.
Breakfast is always the best. The chef who makes omelet is very good. The bed was very comfortable. the hotel being very close close to Sandton City mall made life so easy. thanks for the shuttle to Gautrain station.
Great location, excellent service. Would definitely recommend this hotel. If you need to be in and around Sandton CBD area, this is a great location for that.
